November Features

November 1, 2018

The staff at the gallery are well into preparations for November's showing! A good number of our artists are returning to the gallery this month with new features, and many of them will be bringing pieces that are perfect for those diligent buyers looking to give the gift of local art for the upcoming holiday season.

Cindy Mawle is has brought us 3 works on canvas and 4 acrylic paintings on cedar from her "Island Dweller" series for her November feature. The largest of these works is "Island Beyond the Deep". At 36"x48", this piece is one that has something new to consider each time it is looked at. Whether it is the glistening buoy in the foreground of the painting, the motion and light displayed in the ocean waves, the island in the centre, or the trees and mountains in the background, it is easy for the viewer to imagine themselves present in this space that Cindy has created. All the while, these elements lend themselves a sense of nostalgia to anyone who has lived on the west coast for a time. Her "Island Dweller" series is equally engaging. For a full write up on these pieces be sure to read a post written by Brooke, our Artistic Coordinator, below:

Nicola Furlong is returning to the gallery this month with two pieces. These mixed media pieces make use of recycled materials to create works that have a steampunk feeling. We recommend seeing Nicola's creations in person to best see the texture and unique elements in each work!

We are also expecting a number of smaller original works and giclee reproductions this month, just in time for those shoppers looking to give local art this upcoming holiday season. Throughout November we are anticipating works from William Watt, Jim McFarland, Tahirih Goffic, Linda Skalenda, Perry Haddock, and Elissa Anthony (just to name a few!).

This November we will also be participating in Sidney's annual Merchants Open House night! This event held by the Sidney BIA features activities and treats, free horse-drawn carriage rides, carollers, a scavenger hunt, and a "scratch and win" promotion which we will be participating in. It is a fantastic opportunity to support local business and see all that our vibrant seaside community has to offer! It all takes place Friday, November 30th from 5-8:30 pm (thats right, we'll be open late!). More details can be found online at the Sidney BIA website.

Finally, watch for a post mid November from our Artistic Coordinator, Brooke, who will be discussing some tips on buying art for couples!
